COMMON ENGLISH COURSES (CEN)

CEN Courses

Common English (CEN) courses are compulsory English language courses for students enrolled in undergraduate programs taught in Turkish. These courses are offered in accordance with Article 5(ı) of the Higher Education Law No. 2547.
The courses are delivered over two semesters, each as 2 hours of theoretical instruction per week (2+0) and carry 2 ECTS credits per semester — a total of 4+0, 4 ECTS.

Objectives

The aim of CEN courses is to help students develop basic English language skills and to equip them with the foundational language proficiency they may need in academic settings. The course content includes activities focused on reading, listening, writing, and basic communication skills..

Coordination

The content of CEN courses, the types and contents of exams, their administration, and evaluation processes are determined by the School Board. The course syllabi and materials prepared by the School are implemented uniformly across all faculties, schools, and vocational schools.

Attendance

Students are required to attend at least 70% of CEN classes. Those who fail to meet this attendance requirement receive a DS grade. The DS grade is treated as an FF grade in the calculation of the Grade Point Average (GPA).

Examinations

To monitor and assess students’ language skills, a midterm exam, a final exam, and a resit exam are administered in line with the Osmaniye Korkut Ata University Undergraduate and Associate Degree Education Regulations.
CEN exams are prepared by the School and conducted simultaneously across all faculties, schools, and vocational schools.
The announcement of exam results and the process for objections are also governed by the relevant university regulations.

Success Criteria

Student success in CEN courses is determined according to the provisions of the Osmaniye Korkut Ata University Undergraduate and Associate Degree Education Regulations.
