Social Work Practice

Social work is a discipline that includes professional work carried out to strengthen and, when necessary, restructure the social functioning of individuals, families, groups, communities and societies, and adopts the "individual within his/her environment" approach. The aim of the social work undergraduate program is to train professional practitioners equipped with the knowledge, methods and skills to make the necessary interventions in this mentioned process of change, strengthening and restructuring. In this respect, the social work discipline has a quality that requires the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge gained within the framework of the undergraduate program. The implementation process in social work education includes various sub-dimensions such as examining and evaluating the psycho-social conditions of the clients, evaluating the client and his/her social environment, evaluating, determining and activating social resources for the client's problems and needs, creating an intervention plan in cooperation with the client and in accordance with his/her needs, and monitoring the intervention process.

Social work has a wide range of applications for individuals and their families in different life situations that may include fragility factors such as special needs, old age, immigration, poverty, etc. Social work education aims to train professional practitioners who have the skills to work in various application conditions and roles with a client system at all levels within the framework of a generalist approach. Social work practice, which allows students to gain professional practice skills in transferring theoretical knowledge gained during the education process into practice, constitutes an important dimension of social work education. Within the scope of practice courses, students acquire knowledge and skills in working with different client groups at micro, mezzo and macro levels, evaluating the client within the framework of professional ethical rules and values ​​of social work, preparing a professional intervention plan, implementing, evaluating and monitoring this plan.

Field practice courses are an integral part of the social work curriculum in terms of students gaining professional identity and practice skills by integrating theoretical knowledge of social work with professional practice knowledge. The social work practices carried out under educational and institutional supervision within the scope of SHB401 coded Social Work Practice I and SHB402 coded Social Work Practice II courses in the curriculum of Osmaniye Korkut Ata University Social Work Department are aimed to provide students with knowledge and skills in subjects such as recognizing social work practice areas in our country, learning and using legislation related to social work, gaining knowledge and experience on how professional social work practices can be carried out, cooperating with other professionals and disciplines, recognizing and using community resources, working with clients from different environments and with different characteristics.

With the practical experience gained through the Social Work Practice I and II courses, students get to know the institution and the client profile, professional work life and institutional culture, while also having the opportunity to recognize and develop their own individual and professional tendencies, knowledge and skill levels, communication skills, strengths and weaknesses. Social work field practice is carried out under the guidance and supervision of an educational consultant and a social worker working in practice in various social service organizations or a professional member assigned for consultancy in the organization. The course aims to have students carry out studies focusing on individuals, families, groups, organizations and societies at micro, mezzo and macro levels as participants/observers. Students develop their reporting skills by preparing activity and process reports, institutional and field introduction reports etc. regarding the individual, group and society work practices they have participated and observed under the supervision of educational and institutional consultants according to the characteristics of the field of practice.
