Academic Advising |
Every student registered at the university has an academic advisor from their first year. This faculty member is the first point of contact for any academic issue. The advisor helps the student plan their course schedule in line with the curriculum requirements and academic processes, guiding them in selecting elective courses in areas of interest. They evaluate the student's proposed course plan during academic semester registrations, considering academic performance, and approve or suggest necessary corrections. During course addition and withdrawal periods, the advisor assesses and approves requests related to the student's course schedule. The registration process cannot be completed without the advisor's approval, making their availability during these times crucial for a smooth process. |
In addition, the advisor informs their students about the academic and professional experiences provided by university education and their field of expertise, sharing insights and guidance. They monitor the academic performance of their students, providing support in academic, social, and cultural activities, helping them adapt to higher education and plan their careers. Advisors support students' psycho-social development, assist in solving potential problems, and direct them to necessary support units when needed. They also provide professional guidance and contribute to fostering a habit of lifelong learning. |
According to the OKU Academic Advising Regulations, the Duties of Academic Advisors |
The advisor guides students in a way that contributes to their academic success and personal and social development, monitors their progress, and responds to management's requests for information about students when necessary. They meet with their advisees collectively at least once per semester and dedicate at least one hour weekly for individual meetings, announcing the time and location on the institution's website. In cases of special issues, they refer students to the Department Head or the Guidance and Psychological Counseling Service if available. |
The advisor announces the weekly meeting days and times with students at the beginning of each semester. |
The advisor assists students with course registration, course selection, adding, and dropping courses according to the academic calendar at the beginning of each semester. They evaluate the compliance of new registrations, registration renewals, and course selection processes with relevant regulations (such as policies and committee decisions) and provide approval. |
The advisor assists in communicating and explaining any regulations or changes in regulations to students. |
The advisor informs and guides students about exchange programs, study abroad opportunities, scholarships, and internships. |
The advisor assists in resolving issues related to their students by collaborating with departments such as the Department, the Student Affairs Office, and the Internship and Education Commission. |
The advisor provides information that prepares students for their profession after graduation. |
Responsibilities of the Student in the Academic Advising System |
Students are expected to be knowledgeable about their rights and responsibilities regarding the educational process, as well as legal and administrative regulations, and to act in accordance with these. |
The student is informed about processes such as registration renewal and course registration and understands that the responsibility primarily lies with them to act in accordance with the established rules. |
The student registers for courses through the Student Information System (SIS) within the timeframe specified in the academic calendar and contacts their academic advisor to obtain approval once the course selection is complete. If the academic advisor suggests changes, the student updates their course selection and resubmits it for the advisor's approval. |
The student adheres to the meeting days and times announced by the academic advisor at the beginning of the semester. When necessary, outside of routine meeting days and times, the student contacts their academic advisor through the Student Information System (SIS) to schedule an appointment. |
The student first consults their advisor on matters within the advisor's scope of responsibilities. They also ensure that their information in the Student Information System (SIS) is kept up to date. |
