Our Faculty at the “World Walking Day” Event

Our Dean, Prof. Alpaslan Dayangaç, Vice Dean Asst. Prof. Hilal Kuşçu Karatepe, members of the academic staff, and our students participated in the “World Walking Day” event organized by the Osmaniye Provincial Directorate of Health to raise public awareness (2 October 2022). Hundreds of students and citizens gathered in Devlet Bahçeli Square and walked to Cumhuriyet Square wearing T-shirts bearing the slogan “Move and Live Healthy,” and carrying placards that read “10,000 Steps Every Day” and “You Could Be at Risk—Diabetes: Be Active Every Day.”

Launched in 1991 by The Association For International Sport for All (TAFISA), World Walking Day offers a simple and enjoyable way to celebrate physical activity and address the global crisis of physical inactivity. Although countries may designate different dates for celebrations, for over thirty years millions of people in more than 160 countries have turned the first Sunday of October into “World Walking Day,” making walking together a habit. The American Heart Association, for its part, has designated the first Wednesday of April as National Walking Day, encouraging people to celebrate by putting on comfortable shoes and walking for 30 minutes—without the need for any special equipment.

World Walking Day activities aim to encourage the integration of physical activity into daily life. Today, insufficient understanding of the importance of physical activity for health—coupled with technological advances and more convenient living conditions—has led to increasingly sedentary lifestyles. As a result, the prevalence of chronic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, and osteoporosis has risen in the population.
