Program History

The Non-Thesis Master’s Program in Painting (Evening Education), affiliated with the Department of Painting, commenced in the Fall Semester of the 2023–2024 Academic Year with an initial enrollment of 25 students.

Degree Awarded

Students who successfully complete the Non-Thesis Master’s Program in Painting (Evening Education) are awarded the degree of Master of Arts in Painting (Non-Thesis).

Progression to a Higher Level of Study

Holders of a Non-Thesis Master’s Degree are not eligible to apply for Doctoral or Proficiency in Art programs.

Career Opportunities for Graduates

Graduates of the Non-Thesis Master’s Program in Painting may establish individual or group-based art education institutions, participate in artistic organizations and events, and work as art educators or art directors in private institutions and organizations.

Assessment and Evaluation

During each semester, one midterm and one final examination are administered. Depending on the discretion of the course instructor, additional exams or activities may also be conducted.
Student achievement is evaluated through midterm exams, performance in assignments, applications, and other in-term studies, as well as results from the final examination and the term project.

Program Objective

The aim of the Non-Thesis Master’s Program in Painting (Evening Education) is to train expert individuals who:

  • Generate and share knowledge in the field of painting on national and international platforms,

  • Contribute to the discipline through qualified academic research,

  • Possess the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experience necessary to establish themselves in academic environments,

  • Are capable of critical thinking,

  • And have the competence to follow innovations in their field on both national and international scales.

Admission Requirements

      

In the admission process for the Non-Thesis Master’s (Evening Education) Programs in Painting, a valid ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) score may not be required by higher education institutions.
If requested, the minimum ALES score shall be determined by the university senate.

Candidates who meet the requirements for the Osmaniye Korkut Ata University Institute of Graduate Studies Non-Thesis Master’s Program in Painting (Evening Education) will be admitted to the program.

Eligible applicants are expected to hold a bachelor’s degree from one of the following:

  • Faculties of Fine Arts: Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics and Glass, Graphic Design, Printmaking, Visual Communication Design, Fashion and Textile Design, Traditional Turkish Arts, Photography, Animation, Interior Architecture, Stage Design and Costuming, Handicrafts Design,

  • Faculties of Education: Departments of Art Education / Painting Education,

  • Faculties of Technical and Vocational Education, or other related departments,
    and must fulfill the general admission criteria of the Institute of Social Sciences for Master’s programs.

Program Structure and Duration

The duration of the Non-Thesis Master’s Program is a minimum of two and a maximum of three semesters.

The program consists of at least ten courses and a term project, totaling a minimum of 30 credits and 60 ECTS.

Students must register for the term project course in the semester in which it is taken and are required to submit a written project or report at the end of the term. The term project course is non-credit and graded on a pass/fail basis.

Students enrolled in the Non-Thesis Master’s Program may transfer to a Thesis Master’s Program provided they meet the minimum requirements established for that program. In such cases, the courses taken in the Non-Thesis Master’s Program may be counted toward the Thesis Master’s Program with the approval of the Institute’s Administrative Board.

Learning Outcomes of the Non-Thesis Master’s Program in Painting (Evening Education)
  1. Graduates of the program are expected to:

    1. Understand social, cultural, and civic responsibilities, and be able to follow national and international contemporary issues and developments.

    2. Uphold Atatürk’s Principles and Reforms; adhere to the ideals of Atatürk’s nationalism; internalize the moral, spiritual, and cultural values of the Turkish Nation; and demonstrate awareness of the richness and productivity of the Turkish language while maintaining proficiency in at least one foreign language.

    3. Possess and apply theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of painting at an advanced (expert) level.

    4. Demonstrate expertise, creativity, and competence in producing works consistent with contemporary art practices.

    5. Have the practical skills and ability to transform materials and ideas necessary to visualize observations and thoughts.

    6. Possess systematic working practices and sufficient expertise in selecting appropriate techniques and methods for project-based topics.

    7. Acquire and develop visual language and expression skills as part of the process of individual artistic development.

    8. Understand that originality in art is a process-based acquisition grounded in unique thinking and observation.

    9. Possess advanced theoretical knowledge in Art History, Art Theory, and Art Criticism, and apply interdisciplinary support from fields such as art tradition, art history, visual culture, art philosophy, and art sociology.

    10. Identify, analyze, and evaluate the historical and social context of aesthetic propositions and artistic practices on both national and universal levels.

    11. Develop approaches to exhibiting and presenting artistic works at an aesthetic level compatible with contemporary developments and technology.

    12. Embrace a lifelong sense of ethical and aesthetic responsibility in art production based on research, observation, and synthesis.

    13. Effectively use various sources of information and resources during the art-making process at an advanced level.

    14. Engage in creative and critical projects that explore the socio-cultural structure and dynamics of the environment.

    15. Approach the demands of the art world, prevailing conventions, and current events with a critical and interpretive attitude grounded in research and observation.

    16. Possess advanced knowledge and skills for environmental adaptation in public art practices.
