What is a Double Major Program?

A Double Major Program is an academic opportunity that allows students who demonstrate outstanding success in their associate or undergraduate program to pursue the courses of a second program with a related curriculum, in addition to their primary program. By successfully completing both programs, students are granted two separate diplomas. In short, a double major provides undergraduate students with the chance to graduate from two different fields of study simultaneously.

In Which Programs Can a Double Major Be Pursued?

A student who is enrolled in any four-year program at OKU and has successfully completed the first year may apply for a Double Major Program in any other available department of OKU in order to obtain a second diploma.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

Eligibility for Application

Students may apply for a second undergraduate (double major) program if, at the time of application, they:

  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 70/100 (2.72/4.00) in their major undergraduate program, and

  • rank within the top 20% of their cohort in the major program.
    In addition, students must have successfully completed all courses required in their major program up to the semester of application.

Students whose cumulative GPA in the major program is at least 2.72/4.00 but who are not ranked within the top 20% of their cohort may also apply, provided that their national university entrance exam score (ÖSYM) is not lower than the base score of the program to which they wish to apply in the relevant year.

For double major programs that admit students through a talent-based entrance examination, candidates must also successfully pass the relevant talent exam in order to be admitted.

When to Apply?
A student may apply for a second undergraduate (double major) program no earlier than the beginning of the third semester and no later than the beginning of the fifth semester of the major undergraduate program.
Quotas
Quotas are limited and are determined annually by the University Senate.
Can a Student Enroll in More Than One Double Major Program at the Same Time?”
It is not permitted to enroll in more than one double major program simultaneously. However, students may register for a minor program in addition to a double major.
Is It Necessary to Take All Courses of the Double Major Program?
Yes. The Double Major Program covers all courses required by the undergraduate curriculum of the relevant department.
What Is the Course Load for a Student Enrolled in a Double Major Program?
Students pursuing a double major may use the maximum course load limits separately in both their major and second major programs.”
Is a Student Enrolled in a Double Major Program Responsible for Graduation Projects and Theses?

Yes. In a double major program, students are required to complete the graduation projects or theses of both the major and the second major separately. Exemptions are not granted. The equivalence, content, and duration of internships required in the second major are determined by the relevant department.

Can a student transfer to the second major program?

Yes. A student enrolled in a double major program may transfer to the second major if they meet the internal transfer requirements of their primary major program.

Does failure in the double major affect the major program?
The second major program does not affect the student’s academic performance or graduation status in the primary major program.
What GPA is required to graduate from a double major?

A minimum GPA of 2.00/4.00 in the second major is required. During the double major studies, the GPA in the primary major may fall below 2.50/4.00 only once. If it falls below 2.50/4.00 a second time, the student will be dismissed from the double major program.

 
 
When can a student graduate from the major while pursuing a double major?

A diploma for the second major is awarded only after the student has successfully graduated from the primary major program.

 
 
Are courses taken in the Double Major Program shown on the transcript?

Courses from the second major that are recognized as equivalent are recorded on the transcript.

 
 
How long must the Double Major Program be completed in?

Students who graduate from their primary major but have not completed the second major may be granted up to two additional semesters by decision of the relevant administrative board. Tuition fees must be paid during this extension.

 
 
Under what conditions is enrollment in the Double Major Program terminated?

Students who do not take any courses from the double major program for two consecutive semesters are dismissed. Periods spent abroad in international exchange programs are not included in this duration.

 
 
Do courses taken in the Double Major Program affect the GPA?

Courses successfully completed in the second major are shown on the transcript and diploma supplement, but they are not included in the GPA calculation if the student withdraws from the program.

 
 
Can a student who withdraws from the Double Major pursue a minor?

A student who withdraws from the double major may receive a minor certificate if all requirements of the minor program are fulfilled.

 
Can a student enrolled in a Double Major also register for a graduate program?
A student who graduates from the primary major may enroll in a graduate program while continuing the double major, provided that tuition fees for the graduate program are also paid.
 
Is there a Double Major Program in the Department of Painting?
As of the 2025–2026 academic year, no double major program is available in the Department of Painting. Preparations are ongoing for the 2025–2026 academic year.

A student may apply for a second undergraduate (double major) program no earlier than the beginning of the third semester, and no later than the beginning of the fifth semester in four-year programs, the seventh semester in five-year programs, and the ninth semester in six-year programs.”   To graduate from a double major program, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 70/100. This may fall to 65/100 only once. If it falls below this threshold a second time, the student’s enrollment in the second major program will be terminated.   For admission to a double major program that accepts students through a talent-based entrance examination, candidates are also required to pass the relevant talent exam.   The evaluation of the courses taken by students who are dismissed from the double major program is determined by the University Senate. Courses successfully completed in the second major but not recognized by the major program are recorded in the transcript and diploma supplement, but are not included in the cumulative GPA
